Today, I installed the newest Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, released as "Lucid Lynx".
With every new version, I become more fan of this OS. Every thing is going better, hardware drivers, bugs fixing in some of the programs. I have been using Ubuntu from version 6 or 7, and I have to say that I noticed a huge improvement in stability and performance.
I am running Ubuntu in a Dell Dimension 3100 with just 740Mb, but Ubuntu is amazingly fast and powerful. I can run many apps at the same time in the 4 desktops and everything is perfect, well, I have to say, that sometimes I demand too much for only 740Mb, but the only effect is that some apps have a pause for some seconds with the window in grey.
Ubuntu means freedom for me, I can do what ever I want, and how I want. Also, lots of free software allows me to find all the tools that I need, from development's apps, multimedia's apps, or any other app that I need.
I am able to run windows apps using "Wine", when it is necessary, for some strange reason :-P
Linux distributions are getting really much better every day, and even though I am an advanced user, I think nowadays the system is getting mature, and suitable in terms of easiness for every user. There are not borders to start using Linux distributions like Ubuntu from my point of view.
How long time will take to be an actual common operating system? .....(any comment?)
What do you need to try it? ..... (any comment?)
All right, lets be honest ( I don't like when I hear this sentence, it is like saying, let me be honest just for a moment, because I am not honest usually, but I don't know how to say with other words by the moment :-) ). Anyway, I am going to point out the two things I can't use in my system.
One is the video conference call using gmail, and the other is a simple trick that I need to make video work in Skype.
The Gmail video system is suposed to be implemented someday, as Google supports open source and standard systems, but they didn't implement this piece of code yet. I hope will come soon.
The trick for Skype video is really easy, and is in the Ubuntu Wiki, section List of 'Fiddle to Get Working' Webcams. I am using Skype 2.1.0.81, and I used the same trick that Ubuntu 9.04.
First step is check that the packaget "libv4l1" is installed, you can do it by using the "Synaptic Package Manger" in "System / Administration" menu. Just by searching and installing it if is not installed.
And then edit the menu (right button on the Ubuntu logo at top left corner of desktop screen), and change the command to start Skype with "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype".
Finally and as a conclusion, there is more world outside of the Windows System, and usually much better and more free, but seems like Windows is like the main religion of the computers, most of the people just believe in the system as the only "god". And the actual cost they pay is much bigger, and of course they are much more controlled and easyly managed by the system.
But, I can understand, people don't want or don't care about that. If they have facebooks why they want to change the O.S, it is not the same? Even though, most of the Windows users have an unstable system, freezing many times a day and being very slow. They pay for that rubbish, so they have to use it at any cost, without questioning any point, just like a religion?
Anyway, if you have had enough of Windows, try Linux and Ubuntu is one of the easiest distributions. Try with a Live CD, if you want experience how is it.
